Things to Look out For
Postpartum is a very unique time post childbirth. Your body needs ample amounts of rest and recovery, and yet you are seldom able to give it just that. The brain is firing off new hormones, which can often dysregulate emotions, and many new moms just don’t feel like themselves.
There is a continuum of postpartum mental health concerns, including postpartum blues, postpartum depression, anxiety, OCD, and lastly postpartum psychosis (the most severe).
Many people struggling with postpartum have a hard time identifying symptoms. Some signs to look out for that suggest you may need professional help:
- Feeling numb and detached
- Thoughts of self-harm
- Increased crying spells
- Overly fatigued
- Irritable
- Resentful
- Intrusive and unwanted thoughts or images
- Compulsions and ritualistic behavior
Often times, loved ones may be the first to notice the change in you and they may encourage reaching out for support. If you’re reading this and questioning if you need help, schedule a free consultation and speak with a licensed therapist.
How We Treat PPD
All sessions are virtual. This helps new mothers feel comfortable in their own home and not have to worry about commute. It also helps with scheduling around the new normal.
We use evidence-based techniques that are shown to be most effective at treating PPD. This commonly includes:
-
- Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) for postpartum
- Interpersonal Therapy (IPT)
CBT helps clients identify their thoughts, feelings and behaviors. They learn to address any automatic thinking patterns and replace them in ways that lead to more positive feelings and actions. CBT for PPD often lasts 10-16 sessions and has been shown to greatly reduce postpartum depression, anxiety and OCD.
IPT helps you identify and work through patterns in your relationships with friends, family, and partners. Through this, negative patterns that may be affecting your mood and behaviors are altered and shown to reduce postpartum depression and anxiety.
At CCC, you will work only with a fully licensed clinician who has the experience needed to treat PPD.
We can also help treat postpartum OCD and postpartum anxiety. Reach out today to learn more about our services. Contact us for a complimentary consultation.
