Winter Blues

Winter can be a difficult time for many people. While there are some magical parts to the season (holidays, gatherings, cozying up by the fire), there are also many elements that make it a challenge. Being in Wisconsin, CCC is no stranger to how the winter can affect your mental wellbeing.

Winter can lead to feelings of loneliness, isolation, and even grief. Therapy can help provide much needed support during this time. Speak with a licensed therapist today to discover how CCC may be able to help you.

Winter Challenges

Limited sunlight. Our brains are wired to need regular sun. It helps regulate hormones and gives energy. During the winter, not only are we stripped of several hours of sun, the limited daytime is often cloudy, grey and bleak. The gloominess of the weather starts to be reflected in the gloom within our minds. Common negative effects of limited sun are:

  • Feeling tired and fatigue
  • Loss of interest in activities
  • Limited motivation
  • Changes in sleep
  • Feeling down and depressed

Holidays. While the holidays are a time of joy for many, there is an equal number of people who struggle during this season. This can come from a whole host of reasons, including (but not limited to):

  • Anxiety & Stress around family gatherings
  • Strained relationships
  • Feelings of isolation and loneliness
  • Grief
  • Financial stress

Feeling lonely. Loneliness does not just happen in the winter but there can be increased feelings of it this time of year. Winter often has less travel, fewer social gathers, and more time spent indoors. This can lead to feelings of isolation and sadness. It can sometimes be hard to know what to turn toward to pull yourself out of this space.
